About Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Gujarat's Walled City and Sabarmati Riverfront

Ahmedabad, founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati River, is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City (designated 2017). The 15th-century walled city — locally called the Old City — packs 26 fortified gates, 200+ carved wooden havelis, and the Jama Masjid (1424) within a walkable 3 km radius. The Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1930, draws historians and school groups year-round and sits 6 km north of the railway station.

Where to Stay in Ahmedabad

Hotels concentrate in three zones: Navrangpura and CG Road offer mid-range and business properties close to the commercial corridor; Satellite and Prahlad Nagar in the west host newer 4-star options near the convention centres; and boutique guesthouses inside the Old City (near Manek Chowk) give direct access to the night food market and heritage lanes. The Ahmedabad Metro Line 1 links the railway station to Apparel Park, cutting cross-city travel to under 30 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is 12 km north; taxi fares to CG Road run ₹300–₹450.
  • Best season: November to February; summers exceed 42 °C.
  • Heritage walk: The Municipal Corporation runs a free guided Old City walk each morning at 08:00 from Swaminarayan Temple.
  • Currency: Cash preferred in Old City markets; ATMs common on CG Road.
