About Udaipur
Udaipur: City of Lakes in Southern Rajasthan
Udaipur sits in the Aravalli Hills of southern Rajasthan, roughly 650 km southwest of Delhi. Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, the city was built around a series of artificial lakes — Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar, and Udai Sagar — that still define its skyline. The City Palace, a 400-year-old lakeside complex stretching 244 metres along the eastern shore of Pichola, remains the city's structural centrepiece and draws the highest volume of visitors. The Jag Niwas island palace, now operating as the Taj Lake Palace hotel, sits 183 metres offshore.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate in three zones: the old city near Gangaur Ghat for heritage havelis and guesthouse rooftops; Fateh Sagar Road for mid-range hotels with lake-facing rooms; and the outer Shikarbadi and Balicha corridors for resort properties with pool access. The old city offers the shortest walk to the City Palace complex and the narrow lanes of the Hathi Pol bazaar, which sells miniature paintings and block-print textiles.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) receives direct flights from Delhi (1 hr 20 min) and Mumbai (1 hr 30 min).
- Best time to visit: October through February; monsoon rains arrive in July and last through September, which fills the lakes but raises humidity.
- Getting around: Auto-rickshaws cover most old-city routes; boats run between ghats on Lake Pichola from roughly 08:00–18:00.
- Currency: Indian rupee (INR); ATMs are available on Bapu Bazaar and near the City Palace entrance.
