About Jaipur
Jaipur: Rajasthan's Planned Pink City
Jaipur, founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, is Rajasthan's capital and India's first grid-planned city. Its old quarter is painted terracotta-pink — a color applied for Prince Albert's 1876 visit — giving rise to the name the Pink City. The walled city holds Hawa Mahal, the City Palace complex, and the Jantar Mantar observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating to 1734. Amber Fort, 11 km north along Amer Road, draws visitors for its hilltop ramparts and the mirror-mosaic Sheesh Mahal chamber.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in three zones: the walled city for heritage havelis with rooftop views over bazaars; C-Scheme and Civil Lines for mid-range and business properties near Mirza Ismail Road; and the Amer Road corridor for resort hotels within sight of the fort. Johari Bazaar, the gem and textile market, sits at the heart of the walled quarter and is walkable from several heritage guesthouses.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Jaipur Junction connects to Delhi (4.5 hours by Shatabdi Express), Agra, and Mumbai. The airport handles domestic and select international flights.
- Best months: October to March; daytime temperatures stay under 30°C. Summer months exceed 40°C.
- Local transport: App-based cabs and auto-rickshaws cover most sights; the Pink City Bus service reaches Amber Fort.
- Currency: Indian rupee (INR); ATMs are widely available in C-Scheme and near Johari Bazaar.
