About New Delhi
New Delhi: Capital Power and Mughal Grandeur
New Delhi became India's capital in 1911, when the British relocated the seat of government from Calcutta. The city splits into two overlapping identities: Lutyens' Delhi, the colonial grid of wide boulevards radiating from India Gate (1931), and the older Shahjahanabad quarter — the walled city built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 — where the Red Fort and Jama Masjid anchor a labyrinth of spice markets along Chandni Chowk. South of the colonial core, Hauz Khas Village and Mehrauli sit near 13th-century reservoirs and the Qutb Minar, a 73-metre sandstone tower completed around 1220.
Where to Stay in New Delhi
Most hotels cluster in three zones. Connaught Place (CP) puts guests within walking distance of the metro hub and the National Museum. Karol Bagh offers mid-range guesthouses a few stops northwest. Aerocity, adjacent to Indira Gandhi International Airport, suits transit travellers; the airport is 16 km southwest of CP via the Airport Express Metro Line (20 minutes).
Practical Tips
