About Agra
Agra: Mughal Capital on the Yamuna River
Agra stands on the west bank of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, 230 km south of Delhi. The city served as the capital of the Mughal Empire under Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan between 1556 and 1658. That legacy left three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within 10 km of each other: the Taj Mahal (completed 1653), Agra Fort (red sandstone, 16th century), and Fatehpur Sikri (40 km west). No other city in India concentrates this density of Mughal-era monuments.
Where to Stay in Agra
Most hotels cluster in the Taj Ganj neighborhood, directly south of the Taj Mahal, and along Fatehabad Road, which offers mid-range and 4-star properties with rooftop views of the dome. The Sadar Bazaar area is quieter and suits longer stays. Properties on the Eastern Gate side are less crowded and give faster morning access before tour groups arrive.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Agra Cantonment station connects to Delhi via the Gatimaan Express (1 hr 40 min) and Shatabdi Express.
- Entry timing: The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise; Friday it closes to non-worshippers.
- Air quality: October–March offers clearer skies and cooler temperatures (10–25 °C).
- Local food: Try petha (candied ash gourd) from Noori Darwaza market, a city-specific sweet sold since the 17th century.
