About Khajurāho

Khajuraho: Chandela Temples on the Vindhya Plateau

Khajuraho sits in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, roughly 175 km southeast of Jhansi. The town is defined by a group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples commissioned by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE. Of an original 85 temples, 25 survive and collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1986. The Western Group — anchored by the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, which rises 31 metres — holds the densest concentration of carved friezes, including the figural sculptures that draw scholars and travelers from across the world.

Where to Stay

Hotels concentrate along Raja Road and around the Western Temple Complex, putting the main monuments within a 10-minute walk. A secondary cluster near the Eastern Group offers quieter surroundings and proximity to the Parsvanatha Jain Temple. Rooms range from budget guesthouses to mid-range heritage properties.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Khajuraho Airport (HJR) receives direct flights from Delhi, Varanasi, and Agra; journey time from Delhi is under 90 minutes.
  • Best season: October to March; midday temperatures stay below 28 °C and the Khajuraho Dance Festival (held each February) draws classical performers to an open-air temple backdrop.
  • Temple hours: Western Group opens at sunrise; carry water as shade inside the complex is limited.
  • Dress code: Shoulders and knees should be covered at Jain temples in the Eastern Group.
