About Mangrove Forest Camp Eco Stay Sundarbans, India
Sundarbans: Bengal Tiger Delta on the Bay of Bengal
The Sundarbans spans roughly 10,000 sq km across India and Bangladesh, with the Indian portion — Sundarban Tiger Reserve — covering 4,264 sq km in southern West Bengal. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the delta contains the world's largest contiguous mangrove forest. The Indian side supports an estimated 100 Bengal tigers alongside saltwater crocodiles, Irrawaddy dolphins, and spotted deer spread across tidal channels observed from watch towers at Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, and Dobanki.
Where to Stay
Eco lodges and forest camps cluster around Gosaba island and the embarkation point at Godkhali ghat, roughly 100 km south of Kolkata. Properties near Bali Island and Pakhiralay village typically offer 6–20 rooms combined with boat safari packages. The nearest rail head is Canning, served from Sealdah Station in Kolkata in approximately 1.5 hours, after which shared boats reach Godkhali. Advance booking is essential between October and February, the peak wildlife season.
Practical Tips
- Permits: Entry to the core reserve requires a permit from the West Bengal Forest Department, issued at Sajnekhali post.
- Season: October to March offers dry conditions; the reserve closes to tourists June through September during monsoon.
- Currency: Carry cash — ATMs are scarce beyond Canning town.
