About Jodhpur
Jodhpur: The Blue City of Rajasthan's Thar Desert Edge
Jodhpur sits at the western edge of the Thar Desert, 335 km from Jaipur and roughly 600 km southwest of Delhi. The city takes its informal name — the Blue City — from the indigo-painted houses that blanket the hillside below Mehrangarh Fort, a 15th-century sandstone citadel rising 122 metres above the old town. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, Jodhpur served as the capital of the former princely state of Marwar. That history shows in the scale of its monuments: Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1943, remains partly a royal residence and partly a heritage hotel.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster in two zones. The old city (near Clock Tower and Sardar Market) puts guests within walking distance of spice stalls and the fort's base. Ratanada and the Shastri Nagar corridor offer quieter mid-range and business hotels with easier road access. Rooftop guesthouses on Navchokiya street frame direct fort views.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Jodhpur Airport (JDH) receives direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore; journey time from Delhi is about 1.5 hours.
- Best season: October to March; summer temperatures regularly exceed 42 °C.
- Fort entry: Mehrangarh charges ₹600 for foreign visitors; audio guide included.
- Local transport: Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs are plentiful; the old city lanes require walking.
