About Gangtok

Gangtok: Sikkim's Ridge-Top Capital at 1,650 m

Gangtok sits on a ridge of the Shivalik Hills in the eastern Himalaya, at 1,650 metres above sea level. The city serves as the capital of Sikkim, India's smallest state by area, and faces Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) — the world's third-highest peak — directly to the northwest. The Rumtek Monastery, 24 km from the city centre, is the largest gompa in Sikkim and seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage, drawing Buddhist pilgrims and scholars year-round.

Where to Stay in Gangtok

Most hotels cluster along M.G. Marg, the pedestrianised promenade at the heart of the city, or on the slopes of Tadong and Deorali to the south. Budget guesthouses on Tibet Road offer valley views at lower rates. Properties in the upper Arithang area sit closer to the Enchey Monastery and government offices.

Practical Tips

  • Permits: Indian nationals need no special permit; foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit obtainable on arrival at Bagdogra or Rangpo.
  • Access: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (West Bengal), roughly 124 km away; shared taxis and buses cover the route in 4–5 hours.
  • Season: October to mid-December and March to May offer clear skies and mountain views; monsoon runs June–September.
  • Altitude: Pack warm layers — temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in summer.
