About Tawang

Tawang: High-Altitude Gateway to India's Largest Monastery

Tawang sits at roughly 10,000 ft (3,048 m) in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, tucked against the Bhutan and China borders in India's far northeast. The town's defining landmark is Tawang Monastery, founded in 1681 — the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second largest in Asia. The gompa houses over 450 monks and a 28-ft gilded statue of the Buddha. The sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born here in 1683, giving Tawang deep spiritual significance for Tibetan Buddhism.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels concentrate along the main market road and near PT Tso Lake, a glacial lake at 13,700 ft used for trout fishing. Most visitors also cross Sela Pass (13,700 ft) en route from Guwahati or Tezpur — a journey of roughly 480 km from Guwahati that takes 12–14 hours by road. The nearest airport is Tezpur (Salonibari), approximately 320 km away. Inner Line Permits are mandatory for all non-Arunachal residents and must be arranged before arrival.

Practical Tips

  • Season: October to April offers clear skies; heavy snowfall can close Sela Pass from December to February.
  • Permits: Obtain an Inner Line Permit online via the Arunachal Pradesh government portal before travel.
  • Altitude: Acclimatise for 24 hours on arrival; altitude sickness is common above 10,000 ft.
  • Currency: Carry cash — ATM availability in Tawang town is limited.
