About Puducherry
Puducherry: French Colonial Grid Meets Tamil Coast
Puducherry (also spelled Pondicherry) sits on the Coromandel Coast of southeastern India, roughly 160 km south of Chennai. The city served as the capital of French India from 1674 until the territory's merger with the Indian Union in 1954. That colonial past survives in the French Quarter (Ville Blanche), a grid of mustard-yellow and ochre buildings along Rue Suffren, Rue Dumas, and the beachside Goubert Avenue promenade. The Tamil Quarter (Ville Noire) to the west offers a sharper contrast: crowded lanes, temple gopurams, and street markets selling jasmine and spices.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster in two zones. The French Quarter suits travellers prioritising heritage walks, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram (founded 1926), and seafront cafés. The White Town promenade strip offers sea-facing guesthouses within walking distance of Promenade Beach. Budget and mid-range options spread through the Tamil Quarter near Manakula Vinayagar Temple.
