About Bukittinggi
Bukittinggi: West Sumatra's Highland Market City
Bukittinggi sits at 930 metres above sea level in the Minangkabau highlands of West Sumatra, roughly 90 km north of Padang. The city of around 120,000 people is framed by two volcanoes — Gunung Singgalang and Gunung Marapi — and cuts through the edge of Sianok Canyon, a 15-metre-deep gorge that drops sharply from the city's western rim. The Dutch-era Jam Gadang clock tower, built in 1926, anchors Pasar Atas (Upper Market) and serves as the city's geographic and cultural reference point.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster along Jalan Ahmad Yani and around Pasar Atas, placing guests within walking distance of the clock tower, the covered Pasar Bawah market, and the colonial-era Fort de Kock. The Panorama Park overlook of Sianok Canyon is a 10-minute walk from the central market strip. Minibuses (angkot) connect the city centre to outlying villages; shared taxis run to Padang in roughly two hours.
Practical Tips
- Altitude: Evenings cool to 18–20 °C year-round — pack a light layer.
- Market days: Pasar Aur Kuning, the city's largest wholesale market, is busiest Wednesday and Saturday.
- Currency: ATMs are available near Jam Gadang; smaller guesthouses may not accept cards.
- Access: Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang is the nearest international gateway, approximately 100 km south.
