About Raja Ampat
Raja Ampat: Archipelago at the Heart of the Coral Triangle
Raja Ampat is an archipelago of over 1,500 islands in West Papua, Indonesia, roughly 90 km northwest of Sorong. The four main islands — Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool — give the group its name, which translates as "Four Kings." Scientists have recorded more than 550 coral species and 1,400 reef fish species here, making it the most biodiverse marine region on Earth. Divers and snorkelers arrive for sites like Cape Kri, where a single dive can yield sightings of over 300 fish species, and Misool's Blue Magic, known for aggregations of manta rays and wobbegong sharks.
Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters around Waisai (the administrative capital on Waigeo), Sorong (the main gateway), and a string of eco-resorts along the Dampier Strait. Overwater bungalows and dive resorts dominate the mid-to-upper range; budget guesthouses operate in Waisai and on Arborek Island. Most resorts include meals and boat transfers in the rate.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Fly into Sorong (SOQ) from Makassar or Jakarta, then take the 2-hour public ferry or a 45-minute fast boat to Waisai.
- Entry fee: Pay the Raja Ampat Marine Park fee (approximately USD 100 for foreign visitors, valid 12 months) on arrival in Waisai.
- Best diving season: October to April brings calm seas and 20–30 m visibility in most dive sites.
- Pack layers: Evening temperatures drop to around 24 °C even in the dry season.
