About Amed

Amed: Black-Sand Coast of East Bali

Amed is a string of fishing villages on Bali's northeast coast, roughly 95 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The area runs about 10 km along the Lombok Strait, taking in hamlets such as Jemeluk, Bunutan, and Lipah. The seabed drops sharply from shore, making conditions ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving with minimal boat travel. Certified divers (through operators using padi-affiliated instruction) regularly explore the Japanese Shipwreck at Jemeluk Bay, sunk during World War II in shallow water.

Where to Stay in Amed

Accommodation clusters along the main coastal road. Jemeluk suits divers — dive shops and guesthouses share the same strip. Lipah is quieter, with smaller bungalow-style properties facing the strait. Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano at 3,142 m, forms the backdrop visible from most hotel terraces. Visitors arriving from Ubud (about 70 km southwest) typically take 2–2.5 hours by hired car via the Rendang road.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Hire a driver from Denpasar or Ubud; no direct public bus serves Amed.
  • Best diving months: April to November brings calmer seas and 20–30 m visibility.
  • Currency: Carry Indonesian rupiah — ATMs are limited past Culik village.
  • Altitude note: Evenings at sea level stay warm, but pack a layer for early-morning Agung viewpoints above 1,500 m.
