About Sidemen

Sidemen: Rice Terraces and Weaving Villages Below Mount Agung

Sidemen sits in the Karangasem Regency of eastern Bali, roughly 65 km northeast of Kuta and about 25 km from Ubud. The valley is defined by layered rice terraces dropping toward the Unda River and a direct sightline to Mount Agung (3,142 m), Bali's highest volcano. Unlike the resort corridors to the west, Sidemen has remained a working agricultural and craft community. Songket weaving — a silk-and-gold-thread textile tradition — is practised in family compounds along the main road, and several workshops accept visitors.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodation in Sidemen ranges from family-run guesthouses on rice-terrace hillsides to small boutique properties with private pool villas. Sidemen Road is the spine of the valley; most properties sit within 2 km of it. Visitors arrive by private car or scooter — no public bus serves the valley directly. The nearest transport hub is Klungkung (Semarapura), about 15 km southwest, where bemo minibuses connect to Denpasar.

Practical Tips

  • Best months: April–October (dry season); rice harvests peak around May and August.
  • Transport: Hire a driver from Ubud for a half-day transfer; scooter rental in the valley costs roughly IDR 70,000–90,000 per day.
  • Altitude note: Evenings are noticeably cooler than coastal Bali — pack a light layer.
  • Textiles: Songket prices vary widely; compare quality across two or three workshops before purchasing.
