About Padangbai

Padangbai: Bali's Eastern Ferry Port and Dive Base

Padangbai sits on a sheltered bay on Bali's east coast, roughly 55 km from Ngurah Rai Airport. The town is best known as the main ferry terminal for crossings to Lombok (4–5 hours) and Nusa Penida (45 minutes by fast boat). Despite its transit reputation, Padangbai draws divers and snorkelers to sites like Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugal (White Sand Beach), where reef sharks and sea turtles are regular sightings.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses line Jl. Silayukti or cluster above the main harbor beach. Budget homestays dominate, though several mid-range properties offer sea-view terraces. Staying in the town center puts travelers within walking distance of the ferry terminal, dive operators, and the night warungs on the seafront.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Bemos run from Candidasa (20 min); taxis from Ubud take about 90 minutes.
  • Ferries: Book the Lombok public ferry at the port — no advance reservation needed. Fast-boat tickets to Nusa Penida sell out during high season (July–August).
  • Diving: Water visibility peaks April–October; bring a 3 mm wetsuit for deeper dives near Gili Tepekong.
  • Currency: ATMs are limited — carry rupiah from Candidasa or Ubud.
