The best areas to stay in Yogyakarta are Prawirotaman for boutique guesthouses and gallery cafés; Kraton for proximity to the 18th-century Sultan's Palace and the Malioboro shopping strip; Sosrowijayan for budget travellers near the train station; and Kaliurang for a cooler base on the slopes of Gunung Merapi. Prawirotaman, south of the Kraton, draws independent travellers with its tree-lined lanes, batik workshops, and mid-range guesthouses converted from Dutch-era colonial villas. Kraton quarter puts guests within walking distance of the Keraton palace complex (founded 1755) and the northern end of Jalan Malioboro, the city's main retail artery. Sosrowijayan, a tight grid of alleys just west of Malioboro, offers the cheapest beds and easy access to buses and trains. For cooler temperatures and views toward the volcano, Kaliurang — 25 km north — suits travellers adding a Merapi trekking day.

Getting Around

Trans Jogja buses connect the airport, train station, and major sights for a flat fare. Ride-hail apps (Gojek, Grab) are cheaper than metered taxis. Borobudur, the 9th-century Buddhist stupa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 42 km northwest; Prambanan temple compound is 17 km east. Both are reachable by organised minibus or private car in under an hour.
