About Killarney

Killarney: Gateway to MacGillycuddy's Reeks

Killarney sits at the northern edge of Killarney National Park in County Kerry, southwestern Ireland — 87 km west of Cork and roughly 305 km from Dublin. The town of around 14,000 residents organises itself along New Street and High Street, within walking distance of Lough Leane, Ireland's largest lake in the park complex. The park itself covers 102 sq km and contains three interconnected lakes, ancient oakwood forest, and Torc Waterfall, a 20-metre cascade 5 km south of town on the N71. Ross Castle, a 15th-century tower house on the Lough Leane shore, stands 3 km from the town centre.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster on College Street, High Street, and the New Street corridor, keeping guests within a short walk of jaunting-car stands and the park entrance at Knockreer Estate. The Gap of Dunloe — a glacially carved valley 10 km west — draws walkers and cyclists who base themselves here overnight. Properties range from large 4-star hotels on the main street to guesthouses along Muckross Road, which leads directly toward Muckross House (1843).

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Bus Éireann and trains connect Killarney to Cork (1.5–2 hrs) and Dublin (3.5 hrs by rail).
  • Getting around: Jaunting cars cover park routes; rent bikes on High Street for the Ring of Kerry circuit (179 km total).
  • Timing: July and August see peak crowds; April–June offers quieter trails and lower rates.
  • Weather: Pack waterproofs year-round — Kerry averages 1,400 mm of rain annually.
