About Kilkenny
Kilkenny: Medieval Capital of the Marble City
Kilkenny stands on the River Nore in Ireland's Ancient East, roughly 113 km south of Dublin. The city earned its "Marble City" nickname from the distinctive black limestone quarried locally since the 17th century — visible in polished floors across Kilkenny Castle, which dates to 1195. That Norman stronghold anchors the south end of the medieval core, while St. Canice's Cathedral (13th century) and its intact round tower define the north. The two landmarks sit less than 1 km apart along The Parade and High Street, making the historic centre compact and walkable in a morning.
Where to Stay
Most visitors base themselves in the Medieval Mile district, within walking distance of the castle, the Kilkenny Design Centre, and the craft brewery quarter along Parliament Street. The Kilkenny Arts Festival draws crowds each August, filling hotels weeks ahead. A smaller cluster of guesthouses operates near Freshford Road on the city's western edge, offering quieter options a 10-minute walk from the centre.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Trains from Dublin Heuston reach Kilkenny MacDonagh Station in about 1 hour 40 minutes; buses from Dublin take around 2 hours.
- Best season: June–September for outdoor markets and festival programming; October for the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival (held late May/early June).
- On foot: The Medieval Mile Museum on High Street sells a combined walking map covering 22 heritage sites within the city walls.
