About Altipiani Di Arcinazzo

Altipiani Di Arcinazzo

Altipiani di Arcinazzo sits at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level on a limestone plateau in the Simbruini Mountains, about 60 km east of Rome in the province of Frosinone. The plateau was shaped by ancient karst geology and was once the site of a Roman imperial villa attributed to Emperor Trajan. That heritage, combined with beech and oak woodland inside the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini, gives the area a character unlike the hill towns of the Castelli Romani further west.

Most visitors arrive for outdoor activity: hiking and mountain-biking trails cross the plateau and descend into the Aniene river valley below. Winter brings cross-country skiing when snow cover is adequate, making Altipiani di Arcinazzo one of the few skiable sites within day-trip range of the capital. The village itself is small — a few hundred permanent residents — so accommodation is limited to agriturismo farms and small guesthouses rather than large hotel blocks.

The nearest rail connection is Subiaco, roughly 15 km to the north, served by bus from Rome Tiburtina station. Driving via the Via Sublacense takes around 75 minutes from central Rome depending on traffic.
