About Piglio

Piglio: Hill Town at the Heart of Cesanese Wine Country

Piglio sits at 700 metres above sea level in the Ernici Mountains of Lazio, roughly 60 km south-east of Rome. The medieval borgo is the geographic and reputational centre of Cesanese del Piglio, the only Docg designation in the Lazio region — a red wine made from the indigenous Cesanese grape that has been cultivated on these volcanic slopes since at least the 16th century. Narrow stone streets, the Palazzo Borghese ruins, and vineyard terraces define the town's skyline.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Visitors come primarily for wine tourism, autumn harvest festivals, and hiking the Monti Ernici trails. The town hosts an annual wine festival each October that draws producers from across the Cesanese appellation. Hotels and agriturismi in and around Piglio offer direct access to estate tastings. A car is essential — the nearest train station is Fiuggi-Frosinone, roughly 15 km away, with connections to Rome Termini taking about 90 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Drive the A1 south from Rome, exit Colleferro, then follow SS155 toward Fiuggi.
  • Best season: September–October for harvest; April–May for Ernici wildflower trails.
  • Wine visits: Book cellar tastings directly with estates — many require advance appointments.
  • Currency: Cash preferred at smaller agriturismi.
