About Asti
Asti: Piedmont's Wine Capital and Medieval Tower City
Asti sits in the southern Piedmont region of northwest Italy, roughly 55 km east of Turin and 45 km north of Genoa's Apennine approaches. The city gives its name to two of Italy's most exported wines — Asti Spumante and Moscato d'Asti — both produced from Moscato Bianco grapes grown on the surrounding Monferrato and Langhe hillsides, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape since 2014. Medieval towers punctuate the skyline; around a dozen survive from the original 120 built by rival noble families between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Where to Stay in Asti
Most hotels cluster near the Piazza Alfieri, the central square named after the 18th-century playwright Vittorio Alfieri, born in Asti in 1749. The Borgo Medioevale district and streets around Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta — a Gothic structure begun in 1309 — attract visitors wanting walkable access to the city's historic core. A second concentration of accommodation sits along Corso Vittorio Alfieri, within ten minutes' walk of the railway station.
