About Montaldo Scarampi
Montaldo Scarampi
Montaldo Scarampi is a small comune in the Asti province of Piedmont, northern Italy, set among the Monferrato hills roughly 30 kilometres south-east of Asti. The village sits within a landscape shaped by centuries of viticulture — Barbera d'Asti and Moscato d'Asti vineyards cover the surrounding slopes, and the area holds UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Piedmont Wine Regions designation granted in 2014. The historic Scarampi family gave the village its full name, and remnants of medieval rural architecture still mark the hilltop settlement.
Visitors come primarily for agritourism, wine tasting along the Strada del Vino dell'Asti, and walking routes through the Monferrato countryside. The village itself is compact, with fewer than 300 residents, making it a quiet base for those exploring the broader Asti wine district rather than an urban destination. Nearby Canelli, about 15 kilometres south, is known for its underground wine cellars — the Cattedrali Sotterranee — also UNESCO-listed.
Access is practical by car via the SP456 from Asti; public transport connections to the village are limited. The closest rail hub is Asti station, served by regional trains from Turin Porta Nuova in approximately 45 minutes.
