About Rocchetta Tanaro

Rocchetta Tanaro

Rocchetta Tanaro is a small comune in the Asti province of Piedmont, sitting along the Tanaro river valley where the Monferrato hills meet the southern Piedmontese plain. The town sits at roughly 130 metres above sea level and is surrounded by vineyards classified under the Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOC — one of the zone's most respected red-wine appellations. The medieval tower at the centre of the historic village marks a settlement documented from at least the 13th century.

Most visitors arrive for wine tourism. The Monferrato wine road passes through the commune, linking Rocchetta Tanaro to Asti — roughly 15 km to the northwest — and to the broader UNESCO-listed Piedmontese wine landscape that spans the Langhe and Monferrato hills. The Bricco dell'Uccellone vineyard, associated with the Braida estate founded by Giacomo Bologna, brought international attention to local Barbera in the 1980s and remains a reference point for Italian wine culture. A smaller number of visitors come for the annual autumn harvest festivals common across the Astigiano.

Rocchetta Tanaro has fewer than 1,000 permanent residents. Accommodation options are limited to agriturismo properties and small rural guesthouses; Asti itself offers a broader hotel range and is reachable by regional road in under 20 minutes.
