About Nizza Monferrato

Nizza Monferrato: Barbera Country in the Asti Hills

Nizza Monferrato sits in the Monferrato hills of southern Piedmont, roughly 35 km southeast of Asti and 75 km east of Turin. The town of around 10,000 residents is the acknowledged capital of Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza, a Docg designation granted in 2014 that applies exclusively to wines produced from a tight cluster of communes surrounding the town. Vine rows cover nearly every slope visible from the historic centre, and the brick-built Palazzo Comunale on Piazza Garibaldi anchors a compact old town where wine shops and enotecas occupy medieval street-level arches.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels concentrate within a short walk of Piazza Garibaldi or along the SR456 corridor. Wine tourists make up the majority of visitors, arriving between September harvest and November truffle season. White truffles from the nearby Alta Langa and Acqui Terme territory appear on local menus from October onward. The nearest rail connection is Nizza Monferrato railway station on the Asti–Acqui Terme line, with trains to Asti taking roughly 30 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Trains from Asti run several times daily; the station is a 10-minute walk from the centre.
  • Best season: September–November combines grape harvest, truffle markets, and mild temperatures.
  • Wine access: Several Nizza Docg producers accept walk-in tastings; phone ahead on weekdays.
