About Caprile

Caprile

Caprile is a small Alpine village in the Belluno province of Veneto, sitting at roughly 1,000 metres elevation at the foot of the Marmolada — the highest peak in the Dolomites at 3,343 metres. The village lies along the Cordevole valley, 14 km south of Alleghe and within the UNESCO-listed Dolomites landscape declared a World Heritage Site in 2009. Its compact centre is framed by steep rock faces and glacier-fed streams, giving it a distinctly different character from the larger ski resorts of Cortina d'Ampezzo to the north.

Visitors come primarily for mountain activity. In winter, the ArabbaMarmolada ski circuit connects Caprile to over 60 km of pistes, drawing skiers from across northern Italy and central Europe. Summer brings hikers targeting the Alta Via 2 trail and climbers approaching Marmolada's south face. The village also attracts road cyclists: the Passo Pordoi and Passo Fedaia, both used in the Giro d'Italia, are accessible within 20 km. Accommodation leans toward family-run mountain hotels and guesthouses rather than large chains.

Caprile is reachable by car via the SS203 from Agordo (20 km south) or from Arabba (12 km north over Passo Fedaia). No direct train service reaches the village; the nearest rail station is Belluno, approximately 50 km away, with onward bus connections.
