About Rocca Pietore
Rocca Pietore
Rocca Pietore is a small Alpine municipality in the Belluno province of Veneto, sitting at roughly 1,000 metres elevation in the heart of the Dolomites. The town serves as the main gateway to the Marmolada massif — at 3,343 metres, the highest peak in the Dolomites — and the surrounding Dolomiti Superski circuit. The compact commune includes hamlets such as Digonera, Laste, and Malga Ciapela, the last of which is the base station for the Marmolada cable car. The area gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2009 as part of the Dolomites nomination, drawing walkers, climbers, and ski tourers year-round.
Visitors come primarily for outdoor pursuits. In winter, the Arabba-Marmolada ski area links directly to the broader Sellaronda loop, one of the longest ski circuits in the Alps. Summer brings via ferrata routes on the Marmolada's rocky southern walls and trail running across high-altitude meadows. The town also carries wartime significance: the Marmolada glacier was the site of intense fighting during the First World War, and a small museum at Malga Ciapela documents that history with original artefacts.
Rocca Pietore has fewer than 1,000 permanent residents, so accommodation is limited to mountain hotels, guesthouses, and agriturismo properties concentrated in Malga Ciapela and the village centre. The nearest rail connection is Belluno, approximately 50 kilometres south, with onward bus services into the valley.
