About La Ila - Stern - La Villa

La Ila - Stern - La Villa

La Ila, Stern, and La Villa are three hamlets forming a single municipality in Alta Badia, South Tyrol, northern Italy. Sitting at roughly 1,486 metres above sea level, the area occupies a broad, south-facing shelf in the Ladin-speaking Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The surrounding peaks — including the Heiligkreuzkofel and the Gardenaccia plateau — frame a landscape that draws skiers, hikers, and climbers in roughly equal measure.

Most visitors come for the Sella Ronda ski circuit, a 40-kilometre loop connecting Alta Badia, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, and Arabba. La Villa's own slopes feed directly into the Dolomiti Superski network, which links 1,200 km of marked runs across 12 valleys. Off the snow, the Alta Via 2 long-distance trail passes within a short walk of the village, making July and August nearly as busy as January. Ladin culture adds a distinct character — local restaurants serve casunziei (beetroot-filled pasta) and sciatt (buckwheat fritters with cheese) that differ noticeably from standard Tyrolean menus.

Hotels here are concentrated along the main valley road between La Villa and Stern, mostly 3-star and 4-star family-run properties. The nearest railway station is Brunico (Bruneck), approximately 20 km north via the SS244, with onward connections to Innsbruck and Verona. Bolzano Airport, 75 km south, handles seasonal charter and regional flights during winter.
