Carsoli sits in the Abruzzo Apennines, province of L'Aquila, roughly 60 km east of Rome via the A24 autostrada. The medieval borgo retains a stone historic centre anchored by the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, a Romanesque church documented as early as the 12th century. The surrounding Monti Simbruini park draws hikers and cyclists, while the Lago di Turano lies about 20 km north for freshwater fishing and lakeside walks.

Visitors arrive mainly from Rome as a weekend base, drawn by Marsica-style cooking — arrosticini lamb skewers, slow-cooked legumes from the Piana del Cavaliere — and by wine estates producing Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC. The town also serves as a staging point for the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, reachable within 90 minutes by car. Walking the steep lanes of the upper borgo past 15th-century tower remnants takes roughly an hour.

Carsoli's train station on the Rome–Pescara line (Ferrovia Centrale dell'Umbria) provides direct regional service to Roma Tiburtina in about 55 minutes, making car-free access practical for short stays.
