About Oricola
Oricola
Oricola is a medieval hill comune in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, sitting at roughly 820 metres above sea level along the ancient Via Valeria corridor that once linked Rome to the Adriatic coast. The town's stone centro storico clusters around Castello Orsini, a fortification that has marked this valley since the medieval period. With a population of around 1,200, Oricola sits largely off the main tourist circuit, making it a reference point for travellers seeking the quieter interior of Abruzzo rather than the region's coastal resorts.
Visitors arrive mainly to walk the Simbruini hills, photograph the castle ruins, and explore the agricultural landscape of the Liri valley. The town lies approximately 70 km east of Rome via the A24 motorway, placing it within comfortable day-trip range of the capital while retaining a rural character that the bigger Abruzzo towns have largely lost. Nearby Carsoli, 5 km to the north, provides the closest rail connection on the Rome–Avezzano line, with journey times to Roma Tiburtina of around one hour.
Accommodation in Oricola runs to small hotels and agriturismo properties, most of which sit along the SS5 corridor or on the valley floor below the old town. L'Aquila, the regional capital rebuilt after the 2009 earthquake, is about 60 km south-east on the A24.
