About Rocca di Botte

Rocca di Botte

Rocca di Botte is a medieval hill village in the Marsica district of Abruzzo, province of L'Aquila, sitting at roughly 900 metres above the ancient Fucino basin — once one of Italy's largest lakes, drained in 1875 to create agricultural flatland. The village retains its stone-built historic centre, narrow alleys, and views across the Fucino plain toward Monte Velino. Fewer than 400 residents live here permanently, giving it a quiet, largely untouched character that larger Abruzzo towns have lost.

Visitors come mainly for hiking and nature. The Parco Regionale Sirente-Velino lies within easy reach, offering trails through Apennine terrain with wolves, chamois, and golden eagles recorded in the area. The village is also a base for exploring nearby Celano, whose 14th-century Piccolomini Castle overlooks the plain just 10 kilometres to the south-west. Local food follows Abruzzo mountain tradition: lamb, lentils from the Fucino, and hand-rolled pasta such as sagne 'ntorzate.

Rocca di Botte is accessible by car via the A24/A25 motorway network; the nearest rail station is Avezzano, approximately 15 kilometres away, with connections to Rome Tiburtina in around 90 minutes.
