About Castel di Tusa
Castel di Tusa
Castel di Tusa sits on the Tyrrhenian coast of northern Sicily, roughly 90 km east of Palermo in the Messina province. The town is small — a few hundred residents — but draws a steady stream of visitors drawn by two distinct attractions: the ancient Greek-Sicilian ruins of Halaesa Arconidea, founded around 403 BC on a hillside above the modern village, and the Atelier sul Mare, an art hotel where guest rooms are permanent installations designed by contemporary artists including Antonio Presti.
Most visitors arrive via the A20 motorway or by regional train on the Palermo–Messina line, which stops at Castel di Tusa station roughly 1 km from the beach. The pebbly shoreline is calm and uncrowded compared to resort towns further west. The surrounding Nebrodi foothills offer short hiking trails and access to the Fiumara d'Arte open-air sculpture park, a series of large-scale works installed along the Tusa river valley from 1986 onward.
Accommodation options are limited but characterful. Beyond the Atelier sul Mare, a handful of small hotels and B&Bs operate seasonally. The town is best used as a quiet base for exploring the Nebrodi mountains and the archaeological site at Halaesa, which covers several hectares and includes a partially excavated agora and forum area.
