About Polizzi Generosa

Polizzi Generosa

Polizzi Generosa sits at 1,000 metres above sea level in the Parco delle Madonie, roughly 80 km south-east of Palermo. The town's Norman-Arab roots date to the 11th century, and its skyline is still shaped by the ruins of a medieval castle and a cluster of Baroque and Gothic churches. The Chiesa Madre holds a rare 15th-century Flemish triptych attributed to the school of Rogier van der Weyden — one of the few Flemish altarpieces still in situ in rural Sicily.

Most visitors arrive for the Madonie mountain landscape: hiking trails cross beech and oak forests of the Parco delle Madonie, and the town sits at the crossroads of routes linking Cefalù on the Tyrrhenian coast (about 40 km north) with inland Gangi and Nicosia. Foodies come for the sfoglio, a crumbly local pastry filled with ricotta and cinnamon, baked almost exclusively here and protected as a Slow Food Presidium product. Winter brings occasional snowfall, making Polizzi Generosa one of the few Sicilian towns suited to a cold-weather stay.

Accommodation options are small — agriturismi and family-run guesthouses dominate, with limited full-service hotels. Public buses connect the town to Palermo's Piazza Lolli terminal several times daily, with a journey time of around 90 minutes.
