About Cefalù
Cefalù: Norman Cathedral and Arab-Norman Coast
Cefalù sits on Sicily's Tyrrhenian coast, 70 km east of Palermo, where a Norman cathedral consecrated in 1131 rises against a 270-metre limestone cliff called La Rocca. The cathedral's apse mosaic of Christ Pantocrator — dated to the 12th century — is among the earliest and largest Byzantine mosaics in Sicily, predating the Palatine Chapel in Palermo by roughly a decade. The medieval street grid, centred on Corso Ruggero, has changed little since Arab-Norman rule, earning Cefalù UNESCO World Heritage status in 2015 as part of the Arab-Norman Palermo inscription.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three zones: the historic centre within the medieval walls, the lungomare seafront strip along Via Cristoforo Colombo, and quieter hillside addresses above Piazza Garibaldi. The sandy beach directly below the cathedral is one of the longest on the northern Sicilian coast. Summer visitors peak in July and August; shoulder months of May, June, and September offer shorter queues at the cathedral and lower room rates.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Cefalù station is on the Palermo–Messina rail line; trains from Palermo Central take 45–55 minutes.
- Beach access: The main beach is free; early arrival secures space during August.
- Cathedral hours: Closed during midday; allow at least 45 minutes inside for the mosaics.
- Parking: The historic centre is ZTL-restricted; use Parcheggio Lungomare outside the walls.
