About Celano
Celano: Gateway to the Fucino Basin and the Sirente-Velino Park
Celano sits at 800 metres above sea level in Abruzzo, central Italy, roughly 100 km east of Rome via the A24 motorway. The town is defined by the Castello Piccolomini, a 15th-century quadrilateral fortress that now houses the regional museum of sacred art. Below the medieval hilltop, the flat Fucino basin — once one of Europe's largest lakes, drained between 1854 and 1875 — stretches across 16,000 hectares of agricultural plain. The Sirente-Velino Regional Park begins at the town's edge, with trails reaching Monte Sirente at 2,349 metres.
Where to Stay
Hotels in Celano are compact in number and concentrated near the SS5 Tiburtina road and the lower town. Properties here serve hikers targeting the Sirente-Velino trails, road-trippers on the Rome–Pescara corridor, and visitors attending the Cavalcata di Celano jousting festival held each summer. The nearest ski area, Ovindoli, is 14 km southwest.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Celano has a train station on the Rome–Pescara line; journey time from Rome Tiburtina is roughly 1 hour 40 minutes.
- Best season: June–September for hiking; December–March for ski access to Ovindoli.
- Altitude note: Pack a light layer for evenings even in July — temperatures drop sharply at 800 metres.
