Gignod sits at roughly 1,000 metres in the Aosta Valley, just 5 km northwest of the Roman city of Aosta — making it one of the closest mountain communes to the region's capital. The surrounding landscape is defined by high pastures, chestnut forests, and views toward Mont Blanc and the Gran Paradiso massif. The commune itself is a cluster of hamlets — including the frazione of Variney — each preserving dry-stone architecture and small Romanesque chapels dating to the 11th and 12th centuries.

Visitors come primarily for Alpine hiking and cross-country routes that connect to the wider Valle d'Aosta trail network, including paths toward Colle Brison and the upper Valpelline valley. Winter brings snowshoeing and proximity to ski areas at Pila, reachable in under 20 minutes by car. The local food tradition centres on Fontina DOP — a protected-origin cheese produced exclusively in this valley — alongside polenta concia and carbonade, a red-wine braised beef dish native to the region.

Gignod is served by the A5 motorway exit at Aosta Ovest, and Aosta's railway station is under 10 minutes by car, with connections to Turin in approximately 2 hours.
