About Aosta
Aosta: 2,000 Years of Roman Stone in the Alps
Aosta sits at 583 metres in the Valle d'Aosta, northwestern Italy, founded in 25 BC as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum by Roman emperor Augustus. The Arch of Augustus, Porta Praetoria, and a largely intact Roman theatre stand within the compact historic centre — a concentration of Roman monuments matched by few Italian cities of comparable size. The surrounding peaks include Mont Blanc to the northwest and the Gran Paradiso massif to the south, giving the city a dramatic Alpine backdrop that draws both historians and mountaineers.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in the centro storico along Via Edouard Aubert and near Piazza Chanoux, placing guests within walking distance of the Roman ruins and the Tuesday street market. Visitors using Aosta as an Alpine base reach Courmayeur in 35 km west and Cervinia in roughly 50 km northeast — two of Italy's main ski resorts — at rates generally lower than staying in the resorts themselves.
Practical Tips
- By train: Aosta station links to Turin Porta Nuova in approximately 2 hours; the A5 motorway cuts the journey to around 1.5 hours by car.
- Best season: Summer hiking peaks July–August; ski season runs December–March. Some high mountain passes close November–April.
- Language: Valle d'Aosta is officially bilingual — Italian and French appear on all road signs and public buildings.
