About Jenesien - San Genesio Atesino

Jenesien - San Genesio Atesino

San Genesio AtesinoJenesien in German — sits on the Salten plateau at roughly 1,100 metres above sea level, directly above Bolzano in South Tyrol. The village commands a sweeping panorama over the Adige valley and the Dolomite peaks to the east. South Tyrol passed to Italy after 1919; the municipality still reflects its Austro-Tyrolean heritage in architecture, dialect, and cuisine — speck, Schlutzkrapfen, and local Vernatsch wine feature on most menus.

Hikers and trail runners come for the Salten plateau loop, a high-level circuit crossing open meadows and mixed larch forest. The terrain is gentler than the dramatic rock faces further south, making it popular with families and those seeking altitude without technical climbing. In winter, cross-country ski tracks are prepared across the plateau. Bolzano's old town and the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology — home to Ötzi the Iceman — lies roughly 8 km downhill by road, reachable also via the Jenesien cable car from the city's San Osvaldo district.

Accommodation in the village runs to around 30–40 hotels and guesthouses, most family-run, with seasonal closures common between November and late March. The nearest international airport is Innsbruck, approximately 90 km north via the Brenner motorway.
