About St. Pauls - San Paolo

St. Pauls - San Paolo

San Paolo is a residential district in southern Rome, defined by the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo fuori le Mura) — one of Rome's four papal basilicas and among the largest churches in the world. The present structure was rebuilt and consecrated in 1854 after a fire gutted the original 4th-century basilica in 1823. It stands over the traditional burial site of the Apostle Paul and draws pilgrims, scholars, and architecture visitors throughout the year.

The district sits along the eastern bank of the Tiber, roughly 2 km south of the Circus Maximus. Its northern edge meets the Ostiense quarter, a former industrial zone now known for the Centrale Montemartini museum, where Roman marble statuary is displayed against early-20th-century power plant machinery. The contrast defines the area: early Christian heritage alongside post-industrial creative reuse. Via Ostiense, the main artery, runs south toward Rome's EUR district — a rationalist urban project planned for the 1942 World Exhibition, located about 4 km from San Paolo station.

Most visitors staying here are pilgrims completing Rome's Seven Churches route, or travellers wanting quieter, more affordable accommodation outside the centro storico. Metro Line B (San Paolo stop) connects the neighbourhood to Roma Termini in approximately 15 minutes. Local markets, family-run trattorias, and a largely non-tourist streetscape make San Paolo a practical base for longer Rome stays.
