Girlan — known in German as Cornaiano — sits at roughly 300 metres above sea level on the western slopes of the Überetsch plateau, 8 km south of Bolzano in South Tyrol, Italy. The village is one of the most respected Pinot Noir addresses in the Alps: the local Cantina Girlan cooperative, founded in 1923, unifies more than 200 growers and produces Blauburgunder (Pinot Nero) that regularly earns 90+ scores from international critics. Vineyards cover almost every slope around the settlement, framed by apple orchards and the jagged Dolomite ridgeline to the east.

Visitors arrive mainly to walk the Weinlehrpfad — the educational wine trail that threads between parcels and explains terroir through roadside panels in Italian and German. The bilingual character of the village reflects South Tyrol's Austrian heritage: street signs appear in both languages, and the local cuisine mixes Tyrolean canederli (bread dumplings) with Italian risotto. The Kalterer See, a warm lake popular for swimming, lies 6 km south, making Girlan a practical base for both wine tourism and summer lake days.
