About Laives - Leifers
Laives — Leifers
Laives — known in German as Leifers — sits 5 km south of Bolzano in the autonomous province of South Tyrol, where the Adige Valley narrows between the Latemar massif to the east and the Mendola ridge to the west. The town is bilingual by statute, reflecting South Tyrol's dual Italian-German heritage codified in the 1972 Second Statute of Autonomy. At roughly 16,000 residents, it is the third-largest municipality in the province. The surrounding landscape shifts quickly from flat valley floor orchards to steep vineyard terraces producing Pinot Nero and Gewürztraminer under the Alto Adige DOC designation.
Visitors base themselves here for Bolzano's Ötzi the Iceman exhibit at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology — the 5,300-year-old glacier mummy displayed just minutes north. Day trips reach the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site via the SS241 toward Obereggen, or south along the A22 motorway to Trento in under 40 minutes. Cyclists use the Adige Cycle Path (Ciclabile dell'Adige), which passes through the municipality connecting Bolzano to Verona over 270 km.
Laives-Leifers has a train station on the Brenner railway line, with regional services running every 30 minutes to Bolzano Centrale. Hotels here tend to offer lower nightly rates than central Bolzano while keeping the same Dolomite access.
