About Karneid - Cornedo all'Isarco

Karneid - Cornedo all'Isarco

Karneid (Italian: Cornedo all'Isarco) is a small German-speaking municipality in South Tyrol, sitting roughly 10 kilometres southeast of Bolzano along the Isarco River valley. The commune takes its name from Castel Cornedo, a 13th-century castle that rises above forested slopes on the valley's eastern flank. South Tyrol's dual Austrian and Italian heritage is visible in the bilingual street signs, traditional Tyrolean farmhouses, and local cuisine that blends Knödel dumplings with northern Italian wine-cellar culture. The surrounding hillsides sit within reach of the Latemar and Schlern-Rosengarten nature parks, both part of the UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage Site designated in 2009.

Visitors are typically hikers, cyclists, and travellers seeking a quieter alternative to Bolzano's city hotels. The Val d'Ega (Eggental) road connecting Karneid to the Carezza lake and Nova Levante ski area begins just east of the commune, making it a practical base for Dolomite day trips between November and April. Local winemakers in the Isarco Valley cultivate Kerner and Sylvaner grapes at some of the highest-altitude vineyards in Europe.

The nearest rail connection is Bolzano/Bozen station, served by regional Trenitalia and OBB trains from Innsbruck (Austria) and Verona. The A22 Brenner motorway exit at Bolzano Sud is approximately 12 kilometres from the commune centre.
