About Latiano
Latiano
Latiano is a small agricultural town in the province of Brindisi, Puglia, roughly 8 kilometres northwest of Brindisi city and 30 kilometres from the Adriatic coast at Torre Canne. The town centre is anchored by Piazza Don Minzoni and the 18th-century Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Neve, whose baroque façade faces a grid of limestone-paved streets typical of southern Salento. Olive groves and vineyards producing Primitivo and Negroamaro grapes surround the built-up area on all sides, and the flat Tavoliere Salentino plain gives the landscape an open, uncluttered character rarely found in hilltown Puglia.
Visitors come primarily as a base for exploring the Valle d'Itria trulli belt — Alberobello is about 40 kilometres north — or for day trips to the Adriatic beaches near Brindisi and the Baroque city of Lecce, 35 kilometres south. The town itself hosts a weekly market every Tuesday and a well-attended festa in late August honouring the Madonna della Neve. Local masserie (farmsteads) converted into agriturismi account for much of the accommodation supply near the town.
Brindisi Airport (BDS) is the nearest international gateway, approximately 10 kilometres by road. Regional buses operated by STP Brindisi connect Latiano to Brindisi and Francavilla Fontana several times daily.
