Santa Teresa Gallura: Northern Sardinian Town

Santa Teresa Gallura sits at the northern tip of Sardinia, separated from Corsica by just 11 km of the Strait of Bonifacio. The town was founded in 1808 under Napoleonic influence and retains a compact grid layout on a basalt promontory. The Torre di Longosardo, a 16th-century Spanish watchtower, marks the western headland and is visible from nearly every hotel terrace facing the strait.

Most visitors arrive between June and September for the granite-fringed beaches. Rena Bianca, a white-sand cove immediately below the town centre, fills quickly by mid-morning in July. Less crowded options lie east along the Costa Smeralda-adjacent coastline: Capo Testa, 4 km west, offers sculpted rock formations and calmer water popular with snorkellers. The town itself has a small pedestrian core with ceramic shops, seafood restaurants serving bottarga from Cabras, and a weekly market held on Wednesdays near Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

Ferry crossings to Bonifacio, Corsica operate daily in summer (crossing time approximately 50 minutes) and on a reduced winter schedule, making Santa Teresa Gallura a practical base for travellers combining both islands. Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is 65 km south via the SS125; car hire is widely available at the airport and in town.
