Find hotels in Arzachena, Sardinia — gateway to Costa Smeralda beaches, ancient nuraghi sites, and the Gallura region's granite interior.
Alzachèna — commonly spelled Arzachena — sits in the northeastern corner of Sardinia, in the Gallura region, roughly 30 km from Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport. The municipality covers a wide inland territory while serving as the administrative gateway to some of the island's most recognized coastline, including the Costa Smeralda strip developed by the Aga Khan Consortium from the early 1960s onward. The town center itself is a working Sardinian comune — market stalls, granite quarry heritage, and the prehistoric nuraghi scattered across the surrounding countryside date back more than 3,000 years.
Visitors fall into two broad groups: those heading straight to the coast for the beaches at Baja Sardinia, Cannigione, or Porto Cervo, and those drawn inland by archaeological sites such as the Li Muri necropolis and the Coddu Ecchju giant's tomb. The summer season runs hard from June through September, when the population swells dramatically and boat charters out of nearby marinas fill quickly. Outside peak season, the area is quieter and significantly more affordable.
Arzachena town center is served by local buses connecting to Olbia and coastal resorts. The nearest train station is in Olbia, approximately 25 km away. Most visitors rent a car — public transport to the smaller beach localities is limited.
