Baja Sardinia: Costa Smeralda's Northern Gateway

Baja Sardinia sits on the northeastern tip of Sardinia, roughly 5 km north of Porto Cervo along the Costa Smeralda coastline. The village developed in the 1960s alongside its more glamorous neighbor, but retains a lower-key character — granite headlands, clear turquoise water, and direct ferry access to La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, established in 1994 across 7,900 hectares of protected sea and islands. The central beach, Spiaggia di Baja Sardinia, faces west toward the island of Caprera, offering long afternoon light.

Hotels cluster along the coastal road between the marina and the village square. Properties range from 4-star resort complexes with private beach access to smaller family-run hotels a short walk inland. July and August see peak occupancy; shoulder season (May–June and September) offers lower rates with sea temperatures still above 22 °C.

• Getting there: Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) lies 30 km south; taxis take roughly 35 minutes.
• Ferries: Regular summer departures from Palau, 15 km north, reach La Maddalena in 15 minutes.
