About Malfa

Malfa

Malfa sits on the northern coast of Salina, one of the seven Aeolian Islands off Sicily's Tyrrhenian shore. The village is small — roughly 900 residents — but it carries an outsized reputation among travellers who seek the Aeolian Islands without the crowds of Lipari or the celebrity circuit of Panarea. Terraced caper fields and Malvasia vineyards climb the slopes above the port, and the volcanic profile of Monte Fossa delle Felci (962 m) frames every view inland. The ferry from Milazzo on the Sicilian mainland takes around two hours, docking at Santa Marina or Rinella before a short road transfer to Malfa.

Most guests arrive between May and September, drawn by the calm sea, the hillside paths connecting Malfa to the hamlets of Pollara and Valdichiesa, and the local Malvasia delle Lipari DOC wine produced from grapes grown on mineral-rich volcanic soil. The beach at Pollara — a crater bay featured in the 1994 film Il Postino — is reachable in about 20 minutes on foot from Malfa's main piazza. Accommodation options are concentrated in and around the village centre, ranging from small family-run hotels to agriturismo properties with sea-facing terraces.

Hotels in Malfa number fewer than 30 properties on most booking platforms. Rates typically start around €80–120 per night in shoulder season. The closest airport is Reggio Calabria (REG), roughly 90 km away including the sea crossing, though Catania Fontanarossa (CTA) is the most common international entry point at about 140 km by road and ferry.
