About Pachino
Pachino: Sicily's Tomato Coast at Italy's Southern Tip
Pachino sits at the southeastern corner of Sicily, roughly 50 km south of Siracusa in the Province of Syracuse. The town is internationally recognised for the Pomodoro di Pachino IGP, a protected cherry tomato cultivated in the intense sun and mineral-rich soils of this peninsula since the 1980s. That agricultural identity shapes the local economy, the markets, and the tables of every trattoria in the area.
Visitors arrive primarily for the nearby coastline. The Riserva Naturale Orientata Vendicari, a coastal wetland reserve 20 km north, draws birdwatchers and walkers to its salt lagoons and Byzantine watchtower. To the south, the white-sand beaches of Marzamemi — a fishing village 5 km from Pachino — attract summer crowds from late June through August. Portopalo di Capo Passero, 8 km further south, marks the southernmost point of Sicily and sits closer to Tunisia than to Milan.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Catania Fontanarossa Airport is approximately 110 km north; car hire is the most practical option as train connections require changes at Siracusa.
- Best season: May–June and September offer beach weather with smaller crowds than July–August.
- Local market: Pachino's weekly market runs on Thursdays in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
- Currency: Euro (€). Most smaller restaurants are cash-preferred.
