About Modica

Modica: Baroque Capital of the Ragusa Iblea Plateau

Modica sits in southeastern Sicily, carved into two limestone gorges that divide the city into Modica Alta (upper town) and Modica Bassa (lower town). A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 — grouped with seven other late-Baroque Sicilian towns — it was rebuilt after the catastrophic 1693 earthquake that levelled much of Val di Noto. The result is a remarkably coherent 18th-century streetscape: San Giorgio Cathedral climbs 250 steps above Corso Umberto I, its façade a textbook example of Sicilian Baroque.

Where to Stay and What Draws Visitors

Most hotels occupy converted palazzo buildings along Corso Umberto I or on the upper slopes near San Pietro Church. Visitors come for the architecture, the Ibleo countryside day trips toward Ragusa and Ispica, and the city's singular food culture — Modica chocolate, made without sugar refinement using an Aztec-derived cold-process technique introduced via Spanish colonial rule, is sold in shops throughout Modica Bassa.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Modica has a rail station on the Siracusa–Ragusa line; the journey from Siracusa takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • On foot: the upper town requires steep walking; comfortable shoes are essential.
  • Best season: April–June and September–October avoid peak summer heat above 35 °C.
