About Vittoria

Vittoria: Cerasuolo Country in the Ragusa Hinterland

Vittoria sits in the southeastern corner of Sicily, 20 km west of Ragusa on the Ippari plain. Founded in 1607 by Vittoria Colonna Enriquez, the city follows a Renaissance grid that survives almost intact around Piazza del Popolo, where the neoclassical Teatro Comunale faces the church of Madonna delle Grazie. The surrounding territory produces Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only Docg wine, a blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato grown on sandy soils that resist phylloxera — many vines exceed 80 years in age.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels cluster near the central grid or along the SS115 state road connecting Vittoria to Gela (40 km west) and Modica (35 km east). The A19 motorway interchange at Ragusa puts Catania Fontanarossa Airport roughly 90 km northeast — about one hour by car. Local buses run by AST link Vittoria to Ragusa and Comiso, where a regional airport handles some low-cost routes.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: April–June for mild temperatures and vine flowering; harvest runs September–October.
  • Wine estates: Several Cerasuolo producers offer cellar visits; book at least a week ahead during harvest.
  • Day trips: Ragusa Ibla baroque quarter is 25 minutes by car; Scicli and Modica are under 40 km.
  • Currency: Euro; rural estates often prefer cash for direct purchases.
